According to a Wall Street Journal study, India has a growing obesity problem and the issue is prevailing more among the females of the country. India has now become the third most obese country in the world. The issue is severe both in rural as well as in metropolitan cities. States like Delhi, Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat have reportedly more numbers of obese people.

Thankfully, advances in the medical and surgical science have brought in innovative and cost-efficient solution to weight loss. Weight loss surgery, also known as bariatric surgery, has been a common procedure in India these days due to increasing concern of obesity among the people. Bariatric surgery is such a method wherein the physiology and metabolism mechanism of the human body is altered to encourage low calorie intake

Speaking on the issue of obesity in India, Dr. Vij said, “With dramatic change in the lifestyle of average Indians and severe work and life imbalance, the percentage of obese people is growing rapidly in our country. While we encourage the obesity patients to gain control on their dieting habits and do more physical activity to handle the case by themselves; however, in certain cases, the situation is controlled only through surgeries. We always wish people should feel more confident and lead an active and disease free life, which could be otherwise taken away from them due to obesity.”
